Her Royal Highness's Traditional Christmas Service of Carols Honours Unsung Heroes
The Princess of Wales is hosting her annual Christmas carol concert at the iconic London venue, with guests including dignitaries, stars, and everyday helpers who have helped their communities.
The sizable congregation will hear a mix of carols, music and readings from stars like award-winning actors.
A Theme of Compassion and Love
The focus of the service, held in the atmospheric historic church on Friday, is compassion and demonstrating care for others.
Attending the event are a couple named the Cordiners, whose daughter died of a tumour, and who set up a charity, a support fund, to help households where there is a child with a terminal illness.
"The time, care and compassion you give, often without fanfare or recognition, and without any thought of thanks or praise, make an remarkable change to the circumstances of individuals," Her Royal Highness stated in a letter ahead of the concert.
A Steady Comeback
The Princess of Wales is continuing her own gradual return to official duties following her health challenges and treatment, last month delivering her initial major address in two years, in which she reflected on recognising the "quiet, often invisible work of caring".
Performance and Potential
Guests arriving at the Abbey will enjoy performances from budding artists aided by the Future Talent charity, set up with the help of the late Duchess of Kent to broaden opportunities for music lessons.
Trumpeter Carys Wood, 18, who is a trumpet player and is from Wales, has been supported by the trust, with grants helping towards equipment, teaching, and travel fees - and she said it was "incredible" to be performing at the evening's event.
"Musical pursuits are frequently pricey," the musician remarked. She is now enrolled at the Royal Academy of Music, and added that "everyone should have the opportunity" to develop their musical skills.
A Family Affair
Carys's 11-year-old sister, Eliza, who performs on the brass instrument, will be present at the Abbey. "It's unbelievable that I get to perform here in front of so many distinguished guests," she said.
Among the guests will be people from various age groups.
That will encompass young Saphia Turner, nine, recipient of a youth community award, who creates and sells art and completes fundraising tasks to collect donations for local food charities.
Festive Decor and Performances
The Abbey has been festooned with custom-created holiday decorations, with TV cook Mary Berry and florist Simon Lycett contributing to their design.
Taking to the stage will be recording artist Katie Melua, the Abbey's own choir and a maritime folk band from Cornwall, Fisherman's Friends, who said the chance to take part was "the icing on the cake for us."
The festive event titled 'Together at Christmas' will be aired by ITV1 on Christmas Eve.
