Early Saturday, reports emerged of significant blasts rocking the Iranian capital, amid claims from Israeli officials that it had conducted a preventative strike.
Loud Blasts and Smoke Reported in the Heart of Tehran
As per on-the-ground reports, two powerful explosions were heard in Tehran on Saturday morning. Correspondingly, columns of dense smoke were seen billowing over central and eastern districts of the Iranian capital.
“The type of explosions indicates that this is a missile attack,” a media outlet reported, though it did not initially offer further details.
Context: Rising Strains and Prior Developments
This event occurs against a background of severely escalated tensions in the region. Major events preceding this attack include:
- US Military Buildup: A massive build-up of US naval forces in the region, featuring the repositioning of aircraft carriers.
- Nuclear Talks: Latest talks between the United States and Iranian officials on Tehran's nuclear programme concluded without a deal, with indications of more talks planned.
- Public Statements: Prior to the attack, a prominent American figure had labeled Iran as “the world’s number one sponsor of terror” and issued warnings regarding its weapons development.
- Ultimatum: Reportedly, a time limit of 10 to 15 days had been given to Iran to resolve the atomic standoff or confront severe consequences.
Reaction from Tehran
In response to earlier allegations, Iranian authorities had charged the United States of spreading “big lies” about its defensive capabilities. They dismissed claims about weapons development and protest deaths as unfounded.
The situation is fluid, with additional reports anticipated as the situation develops.
