The Monarch Officially Strips Prince Andrew of Royal Highness Title and Princely Dignity

Through a definitive move, King Charles has officially removed Andrew Mountbatten Windsor of his HRH style and his title of prince.

These alterations were formalized by publishing royal documents under the official state seal, that have been published in the Gazette.

The official notice stated: “His Majesty has been pleased by royal instruments under the Great Seal dated 3 November 2025 to declare that the individual in question shall no longer be entitled to hold and enjoy the designation of ‘HRH’ and the honorific status of ‘Prince’.”

Another record affirmed the removal of the Duke of York from the roll of peerage, effective immediately.

The notice stated: “His Majesty has been pleased by royal warrant under his royal sign manual dated 30 October 2025 to direct his secretary of state to ensure the titleholder to be struck from the roll of the peerage.”

Context of the Decision

This decision follows mounting scrutiny over the former prince's links to the late financier Jeffrey Epstein, exacerbated by the release of Virginia Giuffre's memoir.

The author alleged that she was sexually abused by the former prince after being brought by Jeffrey Epstein, allegations that Andrew has always strenuously denied.

Mechanism of Removing Titles

The king employed his royal prerogative—accepted authorities held by the monarch—following discussions with government advisers, instead of through legislative action.

Letters patent and royal warrants are instruments of this authority, used to bestow or remove honors and styles.

Since the HRH style is granted by letters patent, it can be withdrawn through the same instrument.

Further Measures and Backing

After the palace statement, the senior legal official was directed to prepare the required paperwork for the title removals.

This action also involves Mountbatten Windsor relinquishing his tenancy on his Windsor residence, a 30-room royal property where he has resided for twenty years.

Officials endorsed the king's decision.

Retained Honor

In spite of the stripping of honors, it was announced that Andrew will retain his Falklands service medal, awarded for his role as a Sea King helicopter co-pilot during the Falklands War.
