During an inauguration day in his new role, Zohran Mamdani pledged to “reimagine” New York City, promising “a different age” and an ambitious beginning to his tenure.

A Historic Leader

The young figure, who just a year ago remained a virtually unknown state assemblyman, has become the city's first mayor of South Asian descent. He additionally marked a milestone by being the inaugural to be sworn in using the Qur'an.

“A time such as this comes rarely and rarer still is it that the citizens whose hands are upon the controls for transformation,” Mamdani stated.

Defying advice to lower expectations, the mayor was emphatic: “I will do no such thing. The only expectation I seek to change is that of small expectations. Beginning today we will lead with courage and vision.”

Steering by Democratic Socialist Ideals

Mamdani did not shy away from his socialist politics. “I was elected as a socialist leader and I will lead as one. I will not forsake my convictions for fear of being called extreme,” he proclaimed to loud cheers.

The inauguration was a dual event, starting with a midnight oath-taking in a former subway station. He was formally sworn in on the front steps of city hall by Vermont independent senator Bernie Sanders, who praised Mamdani's rise as a victory over powerful interests.

A Costly Policy Agenda

Mamdani now begins one of the most demanding jobs in American politics, with a plan promising:

• Free childcare
• Fare-free public buses
• A cap on rents for nearly 1 million households
• A trial program of city-run grocery stores

The estimated $10 billion expense of these services may be challenging to fund. Mamdani has vowed to raise taxes on the wealthiest New Yorkers and corporations. However, as a city subject to the state government, he will require the cooperation of Governor Kathy Hochul.

Managing Political Dynamics

The new mayor must contend with skepticism from some Jewish New Yorkers concerned about his past criticisms regarding Israel. Tensions were highlighted during the transition when a senior aide stepped down over offensive past comments.

Mamdani has attempted to smooth over these concerns by persuading Police Commissioner Jessica Tisch to stay on, preventing the appearance of losing a top Jewish official.

On the national stage, former President Donald Trump has called Mamdani a “socialist” and warned of withholding government money. Despite this, a prior meeting between the two was described as surprisingly friendly.

The Basic Challenges of Leadership

Traditionally, New York mayors are judged on their ability in providing basic services: sanitation, reducing the rodent problem, fixing potholes, and making sure reliable transit operation.

Outgoing Mayor Eric Adams touted his administration's public safety record, pointing to record low numbers of murders and gun violence in 2025, with 301 homicides recorded.

As his work starts, Mamdani and his wife will relocate from their Astoria apartment to the historic Gracie Mansion. The outgoing mayor offered a quirky warning about a supposed friendly ghost in the home, which allegedly only troubles those who do not act to “do right by the city.”

Mamdani ended his address with a direct statement: “The work has only just begun.”
